Black Hills Spruce Seedlings, approx 5-10″ tall

Black Hills Spruce is a slow-growing, compact tree, but that slow growth results in very dense growth. Therefore this species is perfect for privacy screens and windbreaks. Unlike many of the faster growing evergreen species, you cannot see through this species as the tree matures. It’s short bright bluish green needles and a dense, conical shape makes this evergreen species a landscaper’s friend.

FOR SALE, shipping March 25 through end of May 2024

Picea glauca ‘Densata’ is virtually immune to the most common spruce pests and is very tolerant of drying winter winds. These characteristics make it ideal as an ornamental, privacy screen or windbreak if you have some patience with it’s slower growth. ‘Densata’ can reach heights of about 50 feet over a life span of up to 300 years.

Black Hills Spruce, Picea glauca ‘Densata’, is actually a subspecies of White Spruce, Picea glauca, and therefore shares nearly all of the same characteristics. However, Black Hills Spruce do not exhibit the “interesting” [read: slightly stinky] aroma of the White Spruce.

Although named after the South Dakota region in which it is naturally found, this species actually thrives in a much wider range of cooler, moist regions, including states as far south as Georgia if planted at a higher elevation. It makes for a very useful ornamental spruce indeed.
