Douglas Fir have been planted as lumber and timber stock for decades, and established themselves early in the 20th century as one of the primary species grown as Christmas trees. Today Pseudotsuga menziesii are almost universally harvested from tree farms, not from the wild. This species thrives in its native environments of the western United States, from California to its true stronghold of Oregon and Washington. Curiously, Pseudotsuga menziesii are not a “true fir” species despite its overall similar appearance to the true firs [the Abies genus of Fraser Fir, Balsam Fir, etc.]. Hence the “pseudo” in its latin name.<\/p>\n

Seedings of Douglas Fir grow rapidly, and can reach heights of over 200 feet during a lifespan which can surpass 1,000 years. The diameter of this species at maturity can be astounding [8-10 feet across in some cases], rivaled only by the famous California Redwoods. Douglas Fir feature soft gray-green to blue-green needles, which carry a very pleasant aroma when cut or crushed.<\/p>\n

True giants of the forest, Pseudotsuga menziesii can survive fires due to their thick, nearly impregnable bark. This species can be finicky when young and prefers moist soil in partial shade. Once mature it will adapt to drier locations due to its deeper tap roots. Once established, they love full sun and will come to dominate an ecosystem by towering over nearly all other plants in the ecosystem.<\/p>\n
