Abies concolor seedlings, approx 7-14″ tall [photo is no longer accurate]<\/figcaption><\/figure>Concolor Fir seedlings grow naturally from the Rocky Mountains all up and down the West Coast. They are widely planted as ornamental trees, and thrive all over the Eastern US.<\/p>\n

Abies concolor is somewhat similar in general appearance to the Colorado Blue Spruce<\/a>, meaning it is a very attractive ornamental tree with a bluish green color. However the similarities end there, as Concolor boasts an appearance all to itself.<\/p>\n

Concolor Fir grow quickly, and reach as high as 70 feet tall over 300 years. The tallest of them are found in never-been-logged old growth forests in the American West.\u00a0They are a “climax species”, meaning they are one of the last species to move into an ecosystem disturbed by fire, avalanche, etc. Once they move in, Concolor tend to dominate that ecosystem until the next disturbance comes along. Concolor Fir are closely related to Grand Fir [Abies grandis]<\/i>, but we do not sell that species.<\/p>\n

Abies concolor have gorgeous soft needles about an inch long, and produce a pleasant aroma. It produces cones about 4 inches long on average, and point up instead of down as with most other evergreens. Concolor are shade tolerant, and grow on both moist loamy soils and drier sandy soils. This species is easy to care for if soil moisture is kept fairly constant and are not planted in full sun in an open field.<\/p>\n
