Austrian Pine feature very long, dark green needles and can grow to heights of 60 feet with a spread of up to 40 feet. It is one of the hardiest of evergreens, able to thrive in occasionally very dry conditions and slightly alkaline soils. These uncommon characteristics make for a very useful evergreen species.<\/p>\n

Among the fastest growing of evergreens<\/span> at up to 2ft per year, Pinus nigra is also amazingly adaptive. This species is tolerant of wind, temperatures down to 20 degrees below zero F, mild road salt runoff, air pollution, moderate drought and hot weather.<\/p>\n

Although officially rated to grow as far south as zone 7, Pinus nigra can often be successfully grown into zone 8 once properly established. They thrive in full sun, but also do well in partial shade, and grow in sandy, well-drained soils as well as heavy clay. However, when first planted this species needs water just as much as any other.<\/p>\n

In the first few years of growth, Austrians retain lower branches and foliage. These will sometimes die off as the trees reach mature height in crowded locations. This species should therefore be mixed with others if you are planting for privacy or windbreak<\/a>. Although the name obviously means they are not native to the United States, they are planted across the nation. The many remarkable characteristics of Pinus nigra provide a wide range of uses: ornamental landscaping, along roads and in urban environments [tolerant of salt spray and salt runoff], as Christmas trees, privacy screens and wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n
