Picea glauca are excellent for use as windbreaks and privacy screens<\/a> due to their generally thick growth combined with fast growth, an uncommon characteristic among evergreen trees. They also tend to retain needles better than most other spruces. This species has impressive and aggressive root systems which adapt very well to a variety of soil types and conditions.<\/p>\n

Native to the northern United States and Canada, Picea glauca are very tolerant of cold windy conditions [reportedly down to negative 50 deg F!], partial shade and wet soils such as stream banks and lake shores. Habitat for White Spruce is generally from Indiana north, although they grow at higher elevations in lower states. They are the most northern species of evergreen tree in North America. White Spruce are an important food source and shelter for grouse and other seed eating birds, as well as red squirrels.<\/p>\n
