Douglas Fir grow rapidly, and can reach heights of over 200 feet during a lifespan which can surpass 1,000 years. Curiously, Pseudotsuga menziesii is not a “true fir” in the scientific sense like Fraser Fir or Concolor Fir, etc. [hence the “pseudo” in pseudotsuga]. However, the common name was applied long ago and is unlikely to ever change.<\/p>\n

Douglas Fir established themselves as one of the primary species of Christmas trees in the US early in the 20th century, and this species is still widely used for that purpose. Today Pseudotsuga menziesii are almost universally planted in and harvested from tree farms for both timber and Christmas trees, almost never from the wild.<\/p>\n

Once established, Pseudotsuga menziesii can survive ground fires due to their massive size at maturity, combined with their thick, nearly impregnable bark. This species is rather finicky about the soil in which it is planted, and prefers dark rich soils which is moist but not wet. Mature Douglas Fir are the largest conifer in North America, are very self sufficient, and provide excellent habitat for a wide variety of smaller animals.<\/p>\n
