The Missouri Botanical Garden web page for Picea omorika [link below] says it is “One of the most attractive spruces”. (Rick’s note: I have one in my own front yard, and I agree wholeheartedly). This species was introduced to the Americas around 1880, but due to its limited range, it is strangely also considered an endangered species. Few natural pests or diseases affect Picea omorika other than White Pine Weevil, which are easily controlled with over the counter pesticides.<\/p>\n

Picea omorika plug seedlings are fast-growing, do well in full sun, and reach a height of up to 60 feet with a spread of 20 feet or more at the base. They prefer richer soils, but can do well in sandier soils if watered a couple of times per week if no rain. Serbians have no significant disease issues beyond other common species of spruce, and are fairly tolerant of both rural deer browsing and the poor air quality of big cities.
