Oriental Spruce Jumbo Plug Seedlings [5-Pack Shown]Oriental Spruce Seedling JUMBO Plugs

(Picea orientalis)
(a.k.a. Caucasian Spruce)

Originally from Turkey, the Oriental Spruce [or Caucasian Spruce] is great for landscaping and ornamental purposes due to it's very attractive shape and color. If you are not familiar with this species, be sure to take a closer look. It is a somewhat slower growing species which results in very dense foliage and a beautiful shape, perfect for privacy screens and shade, as well as bonsai. It also supports many forms of wildlife, such as small game and a wide variety of birds.

Other significant advantages of an Oriental Spruce include its ability to grow in poor, clay and rocky soils, and a moderate tolerance of drought. It also requires little to no pruning to maintain its shape, and is fairly resistant to most pests and disease.

However, this Spruce should be planted in an area protected from strong, dry winter winds or it may lose some needles due to desiccation [freeze drying!]. Planting in a residential neighborhood or mixed in with other trees is ideal, whereas planting in an open field might result in some needle loss and stress [for both the tree and the owner!]. Good rainfall or generous watering in the Fall just prior to ground freezing will help significantly to prevent desiccation.

This species grows to an average height of 50 ft, with a few rare specimens reaching much higher.

Estimated height: 5-10 inches - height does not include roots [?]
Zones 5-8 (see zone map)

Prefers full sun, but does well in partial shade
