Japanese Fir Seedling JUMBO Plugs
(Abies firma)
(a.k.a. Momi Fir, Dixie Fir)
One of the only Fir trees to grow from southern Michigan all the way down to most of Texas, Florida and the Southwest, the Japanese Fir [or Momi fir] grows to a mature height of 40 to 70 ft. Its rich green needles will reveal interesting grayish green undersides in a breeze, much like a Serbian Spruce.
In addition to its ability to grow much farther South than other Firs, the Japanese Fir also flourishes in a wide range of soil types including clay and poorly draining soils. Its slightly slower growth rate results in very dense foliage and a nice pyramidal shape, great for privacy screens and bonsai. After a few years its growth rate accelerates to approximately 12 inches per year.
It is tolerant of both drought and heat, and therefore does well in regions which experience hot, dry or humid summers. The Japanese Fir is also impervious to Phytophthora root rot, which has plagued other Fir species in the Carolinas. Here is a great article on Phytophthora root rot [especially the last few paragraphs, where Momi/Japanese Fir are mentioned]
